Guidelines for lineage display when there is a common ancestor with two or more matched kits

08/2009 - revisions are continuous

If your lineage merges into a previously multiple-tested line but your y-DNA does not match, your lineage will be listed in an "Unmatched section" if provided.

When two or more tested men have closely matched y-DNA and appear to have a common ancestor the following guidelines apply:

Based on good research by the tested man and other researchers -  a merged display to the common ancestor from the tested men’s family branches may be proposed. The following guideline will be used to determine how their lineages will be shown at our Project web site. The Project Administrator and/or Lineage Coordinators will oversee these guidelines.

1.  If there are no objections from the affected tested men or their representatives, their branches will be displayed as merged to the common ancestor.  A lack of objection is considered an agreement.  Those who object will have their lineages not merged to a common ancestor with an explanatory note.

2.  If there are more than two tested men involved, those who do not object will be merged to the common ancestor.  This situation can cause a reversal of previously displayed mergers.

3.. If those tested descendants only differ about data details about the common ancestor, they will try to resolve any differences and notify the project administrator.  Unresolved data will be yellow highlighted.

Example 1  Kits 100 and 200 agree that Jim was their common ancestor and that John was his father, result in a merger showing Jim as the common ancestor, with his birth year unresolved .
