The Perquimans Co, NC branch is being maintained by Doug K Phelps, dkphelps ATsuddenlink.net   and Cathy Roberts  glroberts AT cox.net  Additional research now has concluded that descendants of Nicholas survived and are traceable to the present time.  Contact these persons to view the research and detailed lineages.  Currently a search is on for living male descendants to test.

Revised 5/18/2009      This lineage is being detailed more than usual  because of the intricate connections to North Carolinaro

Gwen Bjorkman published a well documented paper about Hannah Baskel and the line to Perquimans, NC.  A complete version of the paper including footnotes and references is now viewable as a pdf.

 Crawford Felts - b: cir 1823, TN, d: cir 1870, IL

Kit N65854, a Felts, with 37 markers, matched erratically with others of this line.  Ftdna's comment about this was "... with a genetic distance of 3 or 4 or 5 on 25 markers that the ancestor was likely before the time of immigration for this individual and the individuals in New England.  Without any genealogical evidence that there was a connection since that time there is not reason to believe based on the results that it was any more recent than that."  Hopefully future testing will enlighten us further.  Since it does not document a link to any other tested lineages, we cannot show a connection at present.   See further comments in the YDNA analysis below.

YDNA ANALYSIS

The following tables show how well each kit matches every other kit in this line.  The tables were computed using a tool at this web site  which conservatively computes tested members can individually view at their logon at  FTDNA for matched kits.  Note that not all of the kits below may be seen at a tested member's logon at FTDNA because they do not display matches considered too distant.

The modal values indicate the ydna values most often seen and reflect the expected values of the common ancestor of these related Phelps.

An unusual extra DYD464e with a value of 18 was reported for this kit only.  Previously I had included this extra marker in the genetic distance calculations. Considering there are so few kits in this group the modal would be distorted by including the single marker that no one else will have.  So the below genetic distances below don't reflect the extra marker from that one kit.   Members who log on to FTDNA and compare to N65858 will see this distance incorporated.

These two table were computed using a tool at this web site  which conservatively computes what each of you individually can view at your logon at  FTDNA for those kits you match. Note that kKit N65854 has an unusual extra 18 at marker DYS464 .  Since our tool would cause the modal to reflect 68 markers rather than 67, yet N65854 may not be related to the others,  it was omitted in the genetic distance calculations and Time to Most Recent Common Ancestor (Years) (TMRCA) tables above.  This approach may be questionable.

Comment revised 7//12/2009

Kits 63605, 84233, 115585,and 43918 match quite well with one another - with descendants of different siblings.   It is remarkable that we are able to show a very likely proven ydna relationship back to an unknown Phelps in 1605 England.

Kit N65854, a Felts, has an unusual DYS 464e marker, with a value of 18, which will likely be an indicator for all descendants of the patriarch who developed this mutation.  This kit has no known paper trail to a common ancestor with the others.  It matches rather well with two kits, 43918 and 63605, at the limited 25 marker level, but not at all well with the two other kits  (See the genetic distance).  This seems odd, but could be explained because those two matching kits are now limited to 25 markers but may match badly with more markers.. Most interestingly, this 29 mutation is also in Kit N65854.  One would normally expect those two to be of the same direct lineage, yet there is nothing in the paper trails to indicate this.  More marker testing in kit 43918 would shed more light on this.

The unique 29 in DYD449 in  Kit 43918, Henry Phelps line (matching well with the others) might be a tracer mutation for the descendants of that line once the mutation occurred.  Since kit 84233 and kit 43918 have a common ancestor at  "4.  John Phelps – b. 1670-71, Salem, Essex, MA, d. 1722, Reading, Middlesex, MA"   but kit 84233 did not have the unique 29 (nor did the other more distantly related descendants), this suggests that the mutation occurred in  "5.  Joseph Phelps – b. 1704 " - or in his descendants.

Because of the preceding and because there are a limited number of tests of two triangulating lines, with only one from one descendant of Edward (son of Unknown Phelps – b. bef. 1605, England),  we probably need more analysis and more tests to firm up our previous confirmations.

We are searching for a test of the known line of   2.  Nicholas Phelps - b. bef. 1630 England, d. bef 1663 Salem, Essex, MA,  in order to prove the move of his son Johnathan to North Carolina
