                                                              YDNA Analysis   2/23/2011  (minor changes)

Further research by members and Cathy Roberts now indicates that kit 180009 can be merged into the lineage as seen above.  The research is planned to be displayed at the James Phelps of Gates Google discussion group.   We are fortunate to have tests triangulating to three different common ancestors.  They are identified in green above.   In those cases we can probably deduce the ydna values of those common ancestors..

Because of the YDNA closeness of these men and some good paper trails,  I feel we can conclude that this line back to James Phelps of Gates Co. is "very likely y-dna proven".

Additionally, it is now evident that this James Phelps of Gates line is not related to the Nicholas Phelps line of Perquimans Co.   Y-DNA does not support it nor has any solid paper trail research concluded the likelihood.

This table shows the marker values of all the related lines with color codes indicating mutations from a potential earlier common ancestor.  The first row list the Modal values, the likely values of the earliest common paternal ancestor.  Interesting is that while few mutations have occurred no two men have the identical haplotype (or same marker values)

FTDNA's comment:  "It is obvious from our observation of 10's of 1000's of samples that some markers change or mutate at a faster rate than others. Therefore not all markers should be treated the same for evaluation purposes. The markers in red  below have shown a faster mutation rate then the average, and therefore these markers are very helpful at splitting lineages into sub sets, or branches, within your family tree."  FTDNA also says that when a red fast moving marker mutation alone implies a wrong branch, strong consideration or preference should be given to proven paper trails..    They also add that where there are no merging paper trails but fast moving markers of tested men do match, it may be deduced that the matching men may be from the same branch. .

This table compares every member of this line to every other member to indicate the generations within which one would expect a common ancestor, with the probability set as shown in the table. The number of markers of each kit is shown in the diagonal white boxes.  Those having more markers will influence the modal and their closeness to it.  When a kit with fewer markers is compared to a kit with more markers, the comparison is made with few markers..  SImilar information can be seen by logging in to ftdna witih your kit number and asking for ydna matches, then selecting the FTDNATip  report.
